President Joe Biden expressed his great disappointment with the decision made by the Supreme Court on Thursday to strike down a New York gun control measure.
The court decided by a vote of 6-3 that the 108-year-old law, which imposed stringent constraints on conceal carry applicants, was inconsistent with the Constitution.
New York Democrats and Democrats across the country quickly claimed the judgment would jeopardize people’s lives.

“Unconstitutional”
In a statement made public on Thursday morning, Joe Biden wrote the following:
“Since 1911, the state of New York obligated people who want to carry concealed weapons in public to show that they need to do so for the goal of self-defense and to obtain a license.”
“After more than a century has passed, the Supreme Court of the United States has decided to overturn New York’s long-standing right to safeguard its inhabitants.”
“This decision, which runs counter to both conventional wisdom and the Constitution, ought to give all of us serious pause.”
In response to the horrible shootings that occurred in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York, Biden stated people have been motivated to take action.
He reaffirmed his commitment to “doing all in his power to minimize mass shootings and make our society safer.”
The president, channeling the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, asserted the Second Amendment is not an “absolute” right. He urged the electorate to “make their opinion heard on gun safety” in the upcoming midterm elections.
In his closing remarks, Biden said, “I urge states to continue to implement and enforce primary legislation to make their residents and communities safer from gun violence. There is a risk to people’s lives.”
Challenging the Ruling
Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, promised to investigate the state’s legal possibilities for challenging the verdict of the court.
“It is ridiculous that at a point in time of nationwide atonement on gun crime, the Supreme Court carelessly struck down a New York law limiting those who can hold concealed weapons,” the Democrat said in a tweet.
“Just as quickly as we passed legislation that is considered to be the most progressive in the nation regarding gun reform, I will continue to do all in my ability to keep New Yorkers protected from gun violence.”
It is outrageous that at a moment of national reckoning on gun violence, the Supreme Court has recklessly struck down a New York law that limits those who can carry concealed weapons.

After President Biden’s remarks, the White House later issued a Statement of Administration Policy.
In this particular statement, it was said the White House strongly favors the passage of the bipartisan gun reform package that is now being considered by the Senate.
The president previously stated that he would sign into law any piece of legislation that was brought to his attention by the group which was chaired by Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and John Cornyn (R-TX).
