An NBC News survey released Monday found 45% of Americans blame former President Trump for the Jan. 6, 2021 incident at the Capitol.
About 17% of participants felt the previous president was totally responsible for the riots, while 28% said he was primarily responsible.

52% thought Trump was responsible in January 2021, with 28% saying he was totally responsible and 24% saying he was largely responsible.
Was Not Truly Accountable
In the current poll, 35% feel Trump was “not truly” accountable on Jan. 6, up from 29% in January 2021. 20% of Americans feel he’s accountable, up from 18% 18 months ago.
The House select panel probing the Capitol incident will hold its first public session on Thursday. Lawmakers will deliver their conclusions after collecting thousands of papers and conducting 1,000 hearings.
On Jan. 6, 2021, Trump’s followers stormed the Capitol to reverse validation of the 2020 election, which they allege, without proof, was stolen. The unrest occurred following Trump’s “Stop the Steal” event on the ellipse.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a House member on the committee examining the riots, said Americans would get a “full narrative” of the events building up to Jan. 6 for the first time.
“Our purpose is to give the discourse of what occurred in this country, how close we were to losing our system, and what led to the violence,” Schiff told CBS’s, Margaret Brennan.
“I think Americans know a lot, they’ve seen a number of blowups, but there’s a lot more,” the legislator said. “Most importantly, the public hasn’t seen how one thing led to the other.”
Schiff replied to Brennan’s concern about whether the inquiry would lose public interest if no “bombshells” emerged.
The committee chose Thursday’s 8 p.m. prime time to present its findings, hoping to captivate Americans.

Attacks on Republicans
Most of what legislators have gleaned is private. Still, the public discovered through the committee that there was a seven-hour gap in Trump’s phone call records on Jan. 6.
This is when individuals were asking him to quash the rioting. It is also when Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas, pressed to invalidate the 2020 election.
A recent survey from the University of Massachusetts Amherst reveals the public is split on Jan. 6 conversation. 52% of Americans want to study more about what happened, while 48% want to “move on.”
Despite continuing to say the 2020 election is rigged, Trump and his followers have decided to move on from the Jan. 6 riots, accusing Democrats of using it against the GOP.
The DOJ charged Peter Navarro, as well as Stephen Bannon, with contempt of Congress for avoiding depositions.
The Justice Department continues to prosecute the Jan. 6 rioters with more than 800 charges. However, the whole situation looks like a witch hunt with no end in sight.
The NBC News survey was conducted May 5-7 and 9-10 among 1,000 U.S. adults. 3 percent error margin.
