For the first time in our nation’s history (2021), upwards of 100,000 Americans died of opioid overdoses in a calendar year.
This is roughly three times the annual number of deadly automobile accidents in the United States. When you think things can’t get any worse, they do.
Worryingly, it is estimated that approximately two-thirds of drug-related deaths involve fentanyl.
Fentanyl Tablets
This year, Montana Highway Patrol officers have already seized three times as many fentanyl tablets as they did in the entire year of 2021.
Similarly, the number of fentanyl-related fatal overdoses at our state crime lab tripled since 2017 and is expected to rise again this year. One Native American reserve experienced 17 fentanyl overdoses and four deaths in one week.
Also, the death rate from drug overdoses among teens went up by 20% in 2021, after almost doubling between 2019 and 2020.
Once again, fentanyl is the primary cause of these deaths. More overdoses and fatalities wreak devastation on families and communities as law enforcement struggles to keep up.
Dr. Rahul Gupta, head of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, concurs, stating, “This is a very historical period. We have never before witnessed this level of death and damage.”
Why isn’t President Biden doing more to stop the carnage that his administration acknowledged? We know cartels produce illicit opioids on an industrial level in Mexico and smuggle them into groups in the U.S.
The Biden presidency is requiring border stations to act as Ellis Island-style welcoming centers, allowing opioids to enter the country virtually unimpeded.
Every day, Customs and Border Protection agents apprehend and assess thousands of illegal immigrants, only to release them into the interior of the United States.
This futile activity consumes time and money while detracting from the CBP’s mandate of narcotics interdiction.
Adding to the Problem
Ironically, the Biden administration likewise pursued policies that exacerbate the most severe border problem in decades.
Shortly after becoming president, he enacted a new policy, ordering the Department of Homeland Security to disregard federal immigration law regarding the deportation of illegal immigrants with felony convictions, including drug trafficking convictions.

The government then declared it would repeal Title 42’s public health policy, which permits border agents to turn away migrants to avoid spreading infectious diseases, such as COVID-19.
The revocation would cause thousands more migrants to arrive daily at the border, further overburdening CBP agents and making it easier for criminal gangs to carry drugs into our communities.
It is such a disastrous and reckless judgment that even liberal Democrats like Beto O’Rourke and U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MO) oppose it. Thankfully, a court judge prevented the president from lifting the prohibition, at least for the time being.

Montana is fighting because, as in every other state, the border crisis has a negative impact on individuals and communities.
Over 70,000 Americans have died as a result of fentanyl. Together, several Republican attorney generals filed a lawsuit against the Biden presidency to stop this and many other harmful policies before they cause further damage to our nation.
The opioid and violent crime crisis will worsen until President Biden ceases his irresponsible pandering to the far left and takes border security seriously.
Republican attorneys general will continue to litigate against him until he does.
