CIA Officer Breaks Silence on Cover-Up
James Erdman, a senior CIA operations agent who led the Director’s Initiatives Group investigating COVID origins, appeared under subpoena before the Senate Homeland Security Committee. Erdman testified that CIA analysts originally concluded the pandemic likely resulted from a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but were overruled by agency leadership. He alleged the CIA illegally monitored the computer and phone usage of investigators and retaliated against personnel who refused to agree with management’s assessment.
Senator Rand Paul, who chairs the committee, revealed that Erdman testified about files on MKULTRA and the JFK assassination still being withheld. One CIA contractor assisting the investigation was fired one day after meeting with the Director’s Initiatives Group. Erdman stated the CIA did not clear his testimony or written statement before the hearing, and that the agency failed to comply with lawful oversight requirements during his investigation.
Agency Denounces Hearing as Political Theater
The CIA issued a sharp rebuke, calling the hearing dishonest political theater. Agency spokesperson Liz Lyons claimed the committee acted in bad faith by subpoenaing Erdman without notifying the CIA. The agency argued the hearing was unnecessary since it had already assessed COVID-19 most likely originated from a lab leak in January 2025. Not a single Democratic senator attended the hearing, highlighting the partisan divide over COVID origins investigations.

Senator Paul emphasized that closed-door testimony does not provide meaningful oversight, arguing only public testimony creates true accountability. He noted the CIA has yet to turn over files he requested about COVID origins, suggesting the personnel behind the reported cover-up may be involved in gain-of-function research that contributed to the pandemic. The testimony revealed that in August 2021, the intelligence community was prepared to determine COVID-19 likely began as a lab leak, but that assessment changed after Dr. Anthony Fauci became involved in the process.
